I look at clear spirits like liquor as interesting comparisons. Blind taste tests show that it is nearly impossible to discern a difference, but there is a thriving market for mid and high-end brands anyways. There is also a mass market for those who only care about price. I would expect cannabis to develop in this way...stratified based on consumer preferences of both price and quality (even if quality is sometimes only perceived).

Mattnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8152901575140311047.post-56715806412374550702018-10-18T09:19:24.039-04:002018-10-18T09:19:24.039-04:00Interesting stats. At some point, given roughly two thirds of American adults believe at least medical cannabis should be legalized, Congress will either reschedule cannabis form a Schedule 1 drug, (with Heroin and LSD), to Schedule 2 where it can enjoy the privileges of medical prescription where warranted, or completely removed from the CSA and that will be a watershed moment for the industry and those invested in it. this event will usher in intrastate commerce, the elimination of IRC 280E tax burdens and waves of possible acquisitions and consolidation. Our book, The Cannabis Industry Accounting and Appraisal Guide is a useful resource for those trying to price equities in the non public segment of the industry.Ron Seigneur, CPA/ABV ASA CVAhttp://www.cannavaluation.comnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8152901575140311047.post-37076516044099021312018-10-17T06:45:28.747-04:002018-10-17T06:45:28.747-04:00Great post as always!!

In states like California, recreational users can grow their own plants. They are permitted up to 6 plants and, to put that in perspective, 1 plant is an excessive amount of produce for a single consumer. Even without Federal deregulation, the barriers to entry are weak at best. It is literally a commodity business. Marketing and differentiation will be (largely) irrelevant. Investors shouldn't view this as a growth business with sustainable high margins. Once you factor in the likelihood of Federal decriminalization there appears to be a lot of downside in these stocks.
